Hamilton Lodge Ball

An annual masquerade and civic ball thrown by Harlem's Hamilton Lodge beginning in 1869, recognized as the first recorded drag ball in the United States. At its Harlem Renaissance peak it filled Rockland Palace on West 155th Street, drawing crowds in the thousands by the late 1920s and reported as high as 8,000 at its mid-1930s peak, with costume competition at its center. A documented origin point whose throughline runs to mid-century Harlem drag pageants and, eventually, modern house ballroom, a precursor to, not part of, the Black and Latino house-ballroom scene that took shape from 1970.
