A youth-led offshoot of New York ballroom, formed by a new generation of LGBTQ+ youth of color about twenty-five years after ballroom entered the mainstream. Seeded through programming at GMHC and allied service organizations, kiki houses pair competition with peer support, HIV testing, and housing referral, lower-stakes than the mainstream scene by design, an on-ramp that became its own world, documented in the 2016 film Kiki.
