Overview

NYC's longest-running lesbian bar, founded by Lisa Cannistraci and Minnie Rivera in 1991 at 438 Hudson Street, built by community labor on the site of the earlier Cubby Hole, and explicitly rooted in queer women's West Village geography.

Henrietta Hudson opened in 1991 at 438 Hudson Street in the West Village, a space that had previously housed The Cubby Hole, a lesbian bar run by Elaine Romagnoli from 1983 until its 1990 closure. Lisa Cannistraci, who had begun bartending at The Cubby Hole in March 1985 and later worked at Crazy Nanny's, reopened the expanded space with her partner, nightlife promoter Minnie Rivera. The bar was physically built by community labor (donated boom boxes, tools, and volunteer work) an origin recounted in its oral history as emblematic of the grassroots lesbian bar tradition it carried forward. Its name feminizes Henry Hudson, the explorer who named the Hudson River. By the time New York's lesbian bar landscape had contracted severely through the 1990s and 2000s, Henrietta Hudson had become the longest-running lesbian bar in the city; it has in recent years explicitly reframed its identity as a space built by and for queer women and all of their people. The Library of Congress has documented the bar as a cultural institution.
