Overview

Richard Grant's Flatiron room (opened c.1992 in the space that had housed Private Eyes) where Frankie Knuckles anchored Friday nights, the Underground Network's Wednesday sessions with Louie Vega and Barbara Tucker became an industry institution, and Factoria 21's tribal-house Thursday brought a devout gay crowd through the mid-1990s.

The space at 12 West 21st Street operated as Private Eyes from roughly 1988 to 1992 before Richard Grant relaunched it as Sound Factory Bar, a name chosen to signal its affiliation with the better-known Sound Factory on West 27th without sharing that room's strict door or after-hours format. The smaller, ground-level room quickly became a house-music industry hub. Frankie Knuckles held Friday nights, extending his reach from the Warehouse and Paradise Garage lineage into New York's early-1990s underground. The Wednesday Underground Network sessions (featuring Louie Vega, Kenny 'Dope' Gonzalez, and vocalist Barbara Tucker) became a fixture for DJs, producers, and the core soulful-house community. Thursdays belonged to Factoria 21, a tribal-house and deep-house gay night produced by Merritt and Lord G that ran until the club's mid-1990s wind-down. Sound Factory Bar closed around 1997. Its house lineage (Knuckles' garage aesthetic, the Masters at Work axis, Tucker's vocal presence) fed directly into the Shelter and Vinyl eras that followed.
