The Eagle NYC

Overview

One of New York's earliest leather and Levi bars, opened 1970 in a former longshoremen's tavern near the West Side Highway, it anchored the city's gay leather subculture for three decades before closing and reopening under new ownership at a Chelsea horse stable in 2001.

The Eagle's origins trace to 1931, when a longshoremen's pub called the Eagle Open Kitchen operated at 142 11th Avenue near West 21st Street on Manhattan's far West Side. In 1970, in the immediate wake of the Stonewall uprising, Jack Modica acquired the property and reopened it as the Eagle's Nest, one of New York's earliest dedicated leather and Levi gay bars. Its isolation near the working waterfront, far from the Village's more visible gay strip, was a draw: the Eagle was a dark industrial space that felt like its own world. Through the 1970s it became a hub for biker clubs, sports teams, and the gay male leather subculture coalescing around the far West Side alongside neighbors like the Anvil, the Spike, and the Mineshaft. The AIDS epidemic devastated its community: the leather bar scene of that corridor absorbed catastrophic loss through the 1980s, and the Eagle (like the Ramrod, the Anvil, and eventually the Mineshaft) bore witness to that attrition. The leather community organized fundraisers for medical bills and burials when other support systems failed. The original Eagle endured for three decades, finally closing with a farewell event March 3–5, 2000, when Modica opted against lease renewal and retired. A group led by Derek Danton and his husband Robert Berk purchased the bar's name and reopened The Eagle on October 5, 2001, at 554 West 28th Street in Chelsea, a converted 19th-century horse stable between 10th and 11th Avenues, its two floors and rooftop deck (added 2002) preserving the dim, industrial aesthetic of the original while adding capacity. Danton has described the leather scene's change as an evolution rather than a decline, and told the West Side Spirit in 2016 that the bar had never had a down year; it is one of the last surviving leather bars in a Chelsea neighborhood that swallowed the Lure, the Spike, and Rawhide as rents escalated. In October 2024 the bar crowned Zephyr Merkur as Mr. Eagle NYC 2025, its first transmasculine titleholder (a data point in the bar's ongoing evolution toward trans and gender-expansive inclusion) while its annual Mr. Eagle contest continues to send a city representative to International Mr. Leather in Chicago each May. The Eagle's survival into the 2020s was not assured. The West Side leather corridor that produced it—the Mineshaft, the Anvil, the Spike, the Ramrod, the Lure—was dismantled almost entirely by the combined forces of the AIDS epidemic, the Koch-era crackdown on bathhouses and sex venues, and post-1990s Chelsea gentrification. Each of those rooms closed without a successor. The Eagle's persistence depended on the 2001 relocation to a Chelsea horse stable with enough square footage, a rooftop, and a rent structure that the leather community could sustain, and on ownership willing to maintain the room's identity against the economic pressures that converted most of Chelsea's remaining gay bars into multi-concept nightlife venues. The bar's evolution toward trans and gender-expansive inclusion—marked by Zephyr Merkur's Mr. Eagle 2025 tenure and the INTO and Trans Invasion nights—reflects a leather community that has renewed itself by widening who it includes.
