Overview

Chelsea's anchor gay bar and drag launching pad (October 1995 – March 23, 2025), co-founded by Bob Pontarelli and Stephen Heighton, whose nightly drag programming and weekly Star Search competition, credited as a precursor to RuPaul's Drag Race, introduced Bob the Drag Queen, Miz Cracker, and Peppermint to audiences before they crossed over.

Barracuda opened in October 1995 at 275 West 22nd Street, co-founded by Bob Pontarelli and Stephen Heighton, who had previously operated Crowbar in the East Village since 1991. The timing placed it at the center of Chelsea's emergence as the dominant gay neighborhood in Manhattan; when Barracuda opened, Chelsea already held more than a dozen gay bars, but it was among the first of them to organize around live entertainment rather than cruising and drinking. Heighton, who had grown up in England attending music hall shows, was the driving force behind the programming concept. The room's interior — in Pontarelli's phrase, 'a funky living-room environment created mostly from furniture we picked up at flea markets' — divided into a front bar for socializing and a back area with couches, ever-changing decor, and a small performance stage. The anchor of the programming was Star Search, a Thursday-night drag competition that Pontarelli and Heighton had reportedly first staged at Crowbar and brought to Barracuda on opening. Mona Foot (Nashom Wooden) served as the show's founding host; Tina Burner (who later competed on RuPaul's Drag Race Season 13) held the Thursday slot by the 2010s. Closure coverage credited Star Search with preceding RuPaul's Drag Race by well over a decade and serving as a probable model for it. Performers who competed or built early exposure there include Bob the Drag Queen, Miz Cracker, Peppermint, Hedda Lettuce, Flotilla de Barge, and Sweetie. Jackie Beat and Sherry Vine held Wednesday Game Nights from the bar's first weeks; Broadway performers used the room for promotional parties and cast shows; celebrity patrons reportedly included Jennifer Coolidge, Tammy Faye Bakker, Eartha Kitt, Joan Jett, Helen Mirren, Nathan Lane, and Charo. Stephen Heighton died in 2011 (some sources give 2010; the year is not confirmed from a single primary record), but Pontarelli continued operations, and the bar ran its 25th anniversary celebration on September 26, 2021. The closure came from outside: TF Cornerstone, a New York real estate developer, acquired the adjacent assemblage at 250–260 West 23rd Street, which included the Cinépolis Chelsea movie theater, directly adjoining Barracuda's building. The theater closed in January 2023; demolition proceeded through 2024 into early 2025, and the resulting structural damage reportedly made continued operation at 275 West 22nd Street impossible. Pontarelli announced the permanent closure on March 17, 2025; the bar's final night was March 23, 2025. 'I don't pretend we're Stonewall,' he said, 'but Barracuda is a legend.' Barracuda’s March 2025 closure came not from declining business — the bar had celebrated its 25th anniversary three and a half years earlier — but from structural damage inflicted by adjacent construction, a mode of displacement distinct from the economic attrition that had eliminated most Chelsea gay bars from the 1990s. G Bar, Splash, the Lure, and the Eagle NYC had all closed by 2012; Barracuda and a handful of others were among the few Chelsea-identified gay bars to survive into the 2020s, a 30-year run that gave Star Search’s programming legacy unusual documentary depth. Numerous contestants on RuPaul’s Drag Race credited the Star Search stage as their first professional venue or their introduction to performance-level competition; the bar’s role as a training and feeder room is widely acknowledged in drag oral history even if not formally credited in the television franchise’s materials. Pontarelli’s phrase for what he booked — ‘entertainment-drag’, meaning character and spectacle over camp aesthetics — positioned Barracuda against the East Village scene centered on the Pyramid Club and Mother while still operating within a queer performance tradition that ran from the Stonewall era forward. ‘I don’t pretend we’re Stonewall,’ Pontarelli said at the end, ‘but Barracuda is a legend.’
