Overview
Chelsea's anchor gay bar and drag launching pad (October 1995 – March 23, 2025), co-founded by Bob Pontarelli and Stephen Heighton, whose nightly drag programming and weekly Star Search competition, credited as a precursor to RuPaul's Drag Race, introduced Honey Dijon, Bob the Drag Queen, Miz Cracker, and Peppermint to audiences before they crossed over.
Barracuda opened in October 1995 at 275 West 22nd Street, co-founded by Bob Pontarelli and Stephen Heighton (Heighton died in 2011). The timing placed it at the center of Chelsea's emergence as the dominant gay neighborhood in Manhattan following the displacement of scene infrastructure from the West Village; the 22nd Street address became one of the neighborhood's most durable fixtures across three decades. What distinguished the bar in a landscape of Chelsea rooms was its programming model: rather than organizing nightlife around cruising and drinking, Barracuda centered nightly drag shows and, specifically, a weekly drag competition called Star Search, launched in the bar's early years. Star Search ran for decades and was described in multiple accounts as a direct precursor to (and model for) RuPaul's Drag Race, providing both the format and a generation of talent: performers who competed or got early exposure there include Honey Dijon, Bob the Drag Queen, Miz Cracker, Peppermint, Hedda Lettuce, Flotilla de Barge, Sweetie, Shasta Cola, and Monet Exchange. Celebrity patronage over the decades included Jennifer Coolidge, Tammy Faye Bakker, Eartha Kitt, Joan Jett, and Charo. Stephen Heighton's death in 2011 did not end operations; the bar ran through its 25th anniversary in September 2021 and into its 30th year. In early 2025, a demolition project on an adjacent property damaged the structure at 275 West 22nd Street, forcing the venue's permanent closure on March 23, 2025, ending a 30-year run.
