Overview
Nicky Siano's Loft-inspired Saturday party (first on West 22nd Street, then Mercer Street) where Larry Levan and Frankie Knuckles got their start and the garage-and-house lineage took shape.
The Gallery was an invitation-flavored Saturday party run by teenage DJ Nicky Siano and his older brother Joe (who built the room), opening in a West 22nd Street loft and relocating in 1974 to 172 Mercer Street near Houston, where it ran until October 1977. Galvanized by Mancuso's Loft, it built on that template (balloons, no liquor license, a host's devotion) but pushed further into EQ-driven blending, beatmatching and dramatic light cues worked from a booth pedal. Its landmark sound paired variable-speed Thorens turntables and a Bozak mixer feeding a system Alex Rosner helped realize (early custom bass horns, a three-way crossover, overhead tweeter arrays). Larry Levan and Frankie Knuckles worked the party (handling balloons and the food bar, learning by watching Siano) before carrying it to the Continental Baths, Paradise Garage and Chicago's Warehouse. Mixed gay and straight, Black and white, the Gallery is widely credited as a seedbed for garage and house. Its founding date is genuinely contested (Wikipedia gives February 1972; Tim Lawrence gives February 1973), as are reported early appearances by Grace Jones and Loleatta Holloway.
