Queer Nightlife Community Center (QNCC)

Overview

The city's first nonprofit venue built for and by queer nightlife workers, a 28,000-square-foot 1930 industrial warehouse in East New York where daytime healthcare and workforce training share a building with nighttime experimental music and ambient afters.

The Queer Nightlife Community Center (QNCC) occupies a 28,000-square-foot, 1930-era industrial warehouse at the corner of Hinsdale Street and Glenmore Avenue, on the edge of the East New York Industrial Business Zone. The concept traces its roots to 2016–17, when Creative Director Seva Granik (a Tashkent-born Brooklyn-based promoter behind SHADE (2013–15) and UNTER (2015–23)) joined NYC's Office of Nightlife listening tours and pressed for the underground queer scene to be included alongside sanctioned venues. A 2019 city-commissioned study examined how Berlin, Milan, and London provided buildings for cultural nightlife; pandemic delays pushed the project's formal organization to January 2025, when it incorporated as a 501(c)(3), followed by a five-year warehouse lease and a public opening on October 5, 2025. The facility offers roughly 15,500 square feet of interior event space across two commercial units, plus 4,000 square feet of outdoor space, large enough for the building to function simultaneously as a mutual-aid hub, training center, and live venue without either use crowding the other. The operating model is explicitly worker-first and nonprofit-funded, what Executive Director Michael Falco describes as 'donor-based guardrails around a nightlife object and a community of workers', a deliberate rejection of the investor-backed nightlife template. By day the center connects queer and trans nightlife workers to healthcare (including DOHMH-linked mobile health units and a hearing-health program addressing occupational hearing loss), harm reduction, financial literacy, and gig-worker tax education, as well as apprenticeships and artist residencies in technical nightlife disciplines. NYC's Department of Cultural Affairs' Materials for the Arts program donated equipment. The Mayor's Office of Equity and Racial Justice has been among the city agency partners. At night QNCC functions as an unconstrained performance and dance venue. Its signature recurring event is SLAMBIENT, a Sunday ambient afters (launched October 5, 2025) conceived as a musically cinematic wellness program for nightlife workers, combining expansive DJ sets with free yoga, acupuncture, and harm-reduction resources. Club RAT, curated by Juliana Huxtable with DJ sets by Sausha, launched in February 2026 as an immersive warehouse-scale party with site-specific installation and multimedia artwork. The Stonewall Jukebox Project, a 90-minute all-vinyl listening session and talk with DJ-archivist Chris Cruse, developed in partnership with the American LGBTQ+ Museum, drawing on Cruse's research into the Stonewall National Monument replica jukebox, represents the center's explicit archival and educational thread. The center's governance structure pairs a working staff (Falco, Granik, Breakfast Garbowski as facilities lead, and Doren Johnson, a local organizer and QNCC's first community hire) with a Board of Creative Directors drawn from the queer arts and nightlife ecosystem, madison moore (Chair; artist-scholar and DJ), Juliana Huxtable, Nita Aviance, Total Freedom, Makadsi, Ladyfag, alongside Julio Torres, Telfar Clemens, Hari Nef, Kay Gabriel, Viva Ruiz, and Ronan Farrow. Kyle Dacuyan (former Poetry Project executive director, PEN America, NEA Fellow) leads fundraising. The center names its lineage in the queer underground spaces before it: David Mancuso's Loft, the Paradise Garage, the warehouse raves Granik moved through. It reimagines that tradition as a durable nonprofit institution rather than a tenant exposed to rising rents.
